Social interaction and loneliness have received much research interest. However, the direction of their relationship is unclear—does social shape loneliness, or does willingness to interact? We explored dynamics these experiences under exceptional circumstances: COVID-19 lockdowns, which were necessary for public health but impacted people’s lives. investigated between in out lockdown Australia. used experience sampling methodology follow 233 people across 1 week ( M age =30; 8,495 surveys) a period that spanned one longest lockdowns world. Although did not predict subsequent interaction, having predicted lower particularly (vs. of) lockdown. These findings suggest interactions may limit especially during physical isolation. In short, times when we are apart from others be benefit interacting with them most.
